Ireland 1769 1/2 penny
This specimen was lot 23069 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND. 1/2 Penny, 1769. George III. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, EF Details Gold Shield. Evenly worn with dark brown patina throughout and a few very light scratches in the field that hardly penetrate the surface." As the Royal Mint in London could not keep up with the demand for English coinage, it is not surprising that issues for Ireland are scanty and few. This type was struck 1766 and 1769. This example sold for a fraction of the catalog value, perhaps because of the scratches below the bust.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 5.45 g, copper, 26 mm diameter.
