This specimen was lot 33990 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $3,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Muhammad Reza Pahlavi gold 5 Pahlavi SH 1355 (1976) MS65 NGC. Sparkly peripheries, weaving cartwheel luster over golden-toned surfaces." This type was struck SH 1354-1358 at the end of the reign of Muhammed Reza Shah (r. 1941-79), as his megalomania increased and dissent began to rumble. It was minted to the standard of a British five pounds. Gold one, 2½ and ten pahlavis also exist. The coins generally trade as bullion coins.
