Sincona sale 88, lot 74

This specimen was lot 74 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$661 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Afsharid Dynasty, Nader Shah, as king, 1148-1160 AH (1735-1747). Rupi 1152 AH (1739), Tiflis Mint. Äusserst selten, Gutes sehr schön, Gereinigt; Extremely rare. Good very fine. Cleaned. Purchased from A. Shams, Frankfurt, in 1984."

Nadir Shah was the power behind the throne in the last years of the Safavids. Finally, he tired of ruling thru puppets and seized the throne for himself in AH 1148. This silver rupi (ten shahi) was minted AH 1152-1160 after he proclaimed himself shah. It was also struck at Bahkar, Daghistan, Darband, Ganjah, Isfahan, Kabul, Mashhad, Nadirabad, Qazvin, Shiraz and Tabriz.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common mint.
