This specimen was lot 1249 in Goldberg Sale 139 (Los Angeles, June 2024), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "India-Republic. Pattern 2 Annas, 1949. KM-Pn10 variety Aluminum-brass. Without stars. Bombay mint. By Patrick Brindley. Lion capital of Ashoka pillar around legend government of India. Reverse: Peacock facing left. PCGS graded Proof 63. The Peh Collection Part II." The SCWC lists this pattern in copper-nickel. Several other designs were struck in 1949 but the design adopted in 1950 (KM 4.1) featured a bull. No circulating Indian coins exist dated 1948-49, 1947 dated coins being used instead. When Nehru withdrew from the British Commonwealth and declared India a republic in 1950, new coins were issued using the old system of sixteen annas = one rupee. The coinage was decimalized in 1957 and this denomination dropped.
