This specimen was lot 3962 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. East India Company. 1/4 Anna, 1858. NGC MS-64 RB. Single leaf. Even though this piece has a designation of red-brown, it is mostly red with freckles of brown. Well struck and attractive." This type was struck at Heaton and elsewhere in numerous varieties for the East India Company with a frozen date until the introduction of the Victoria quarter anna (KM 467) in 1862.
Recorded mintage: 62,720,000 plus 172,480,000 from Heaton (KM 463.2).
