This specimen was lot 75433 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "ISLE DE FRANCE ET DE BOURBON. 3 Sous, 1781-A. Paris Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS VF-25. Struck over French Sou Marques. From the Sydney F. Martin Collection." The Ile de Bourbon is now Reunion but it is still French. The Ile de France is now Mauritius and fell to the British during the Napoleonic Wars and was a British colony until the 1960's. This type was struck 1781 and is rather scarce; the reported mintage seems exaggerated.
Recorded mintage: 6,720,000.
Specifications: 2.81 g, billon, 23 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-2; Vlack-399.
