SB224-75024r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75024 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $145. The catalog description[1] noted, "HUNGARY. Forint, 1882-KB. Kremnica Mint. Franz Joseph I. PCGS MS-62. A beautiful silver piece with understated matte-gray surfaces that give way to radiant luster and gorgeous sunset hues in the fields." This type was issued for Hungary 1882-90 from the Kremnitz (Komoczbanya in Magyar) mint during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria-Hungary. The denomination was struck 1870-92 and superseded the old half thaler. Most dates are common. After the reorganization of the Hapsburg empire into the Dual Monarchy in 1867, Hungary received her own coinage separate from Austrian issues. In the aftermath of World War One, the Hapsburg monarchy collapsed and Hungary became independent but without its former territories in Slovakia, Transylvania and Croatia.

Recorded mintage: 1,897,441.
