Hungary 1789-A thaler Dav-1169A
This specimen was lot 74281 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "HUNGARY. Taler, 1789-A. Vienna Mint. Joseph II. PCGS AU-53. A handsome example of a popular European crown, this Taler displays some molten gray color that melds in an attractive fashion with the light pattern of wear present of the high elements on the design." We don't know why this type was struck at Vienna when Hungary had a perfectly functional mint at Kremnitz (mintmark "B"). This type is listed for 1785-89 along with a half thaler (KM 399).
Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver.
Catalog reference: Dav-1169A; KM-400.1.
