Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 20366
SB121-20366r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20366 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "HUNGARY. 1/2 Taler, 1786-A. Vienna Mint. Joseph II. NGC MS-65. A sparkling Gem survivor of the issue with impressive detail appearing in the designs and surfaces that border on pristine. As one might expect, this is the single finest example of this Madonna & Child type (under Joseph II) to appear in the NGC census." One might think that this coin, being minted in Vienna, would be collected as an Austrian coin but it is filed under Hungary as the Madonna and Child reverse is distinctively Hungarian. Vienna struck this type 1785-90 while Kremnitz issued a very similar coin (KM 398.2, mintmark "B") 1782-89. Both are common with a low catalog value.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-399.
