Hungary 1679-KB denar Fr-129
This specimen was lot 30745 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $5,140.63. The catalog description[1] noted, "Leopold the Hogmouth gold Denar 1679-KB, AU55 NGC. Very bold with appealing toned surfaces. Gold striking of the silver Denar dies, and very scarce as such. Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." Hungary in the 1650's was partitioned between the Austrians and the Turks and was not part of the Empire. This type is listed for 1662-96 in billon (KM 174) and is common in that metal. Friedberg notes this type in gold for various dates, all rare, struck as 1/3 ducat in weight.
