Künker sale 354, lot 5156

This specimen was lot 5156 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €55,000 (about US$76,544 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Ferdinand II. 1592-1618-1637. 10 Dukaten 1631, NB, Nagybanya. + FERDINANDVS ¤ II : D : G : RO ¤ IM ¤ S : A : GER : H : B : REX ¤ Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Lorbeerkranz, großer Halskrause und der Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies//ARCHIDVX ¤ AVS ¤ DVX ¤ BVR ¤ CO ¤ TY ¤ 1631 Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Schwert und Zepter in den Fängen, auf der Brust zweifeldiges ungarisches Wappen, umher die Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies, unten zu den Seiten das geteilte Münzstättenzeichen N - B. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand II, 1618-37, ten ducats of 1631, Nagybánya mint. Obverse: laureate, armored and ruffed bust with order chain; reverse: crowned double headed eagle with sword and scepter in its claws supports the Hungarian arms with the Order of the Golden Fleece around, mintmark below. Extremely rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Altho the auctioneers listed this coin under Austria, it was issued by Ferdinand in his capacity as king of Hungary. Three dates exist, 1631, 1632 and 1635, all rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 35 g, 0.986 fine gold, 1.102 troy oz AGW, this specimen 34,65 g.
