Hungary 1528-KB denar
This specimen was lot 71789 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "HUNGARY. Denar, 1528-KB. Kremnica Mint. Ferdinand I. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. Tied with just one other for the finest in the PCGS census, this sharply struck near-Gem minor presents a good deal of shimmering luster." The Hungarian monarchy collapsed when the last native king was killed fighting the Turks in 1526. The Turks established a protectorate over Transylvania and annexed most of Hungary with the exception of a slice in the west, which was seized by the Hapsburgs. The three parties would contend for Hungary for the next century and a half, depopulating the once rich land.
