Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 45053

This specimen was lot 45053 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONG KONG. Bi-Metallic Proof 10 Dollars, 1994. GEM PROOF. A brilliant Proof with mirrored fields and frosty devices. Sold with original display case and certificate of authenticity #14521." This type was struck 1993-95 in the final years of British rule over Hong Kong. A bauhinia flower has been substituted for the queen's portrait. The next issue of this denomination was in 1997, after the takeover by the People's Republic of China.

Recorded mintage: 20,000.

Specification: circulation issue: nickel-brass center in copper-nickel ring, 24 mm diameter; this issue, 18.30 g, 0.917 fine gold.
