Hong Kong 1941-KN 5 cents
This specimen was lot 30015 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "George VI 5 Cents 1941-KN AU58 PCGS, Kings Norton mint. Some remaining luster, with sharp definition and moderate handling marks. The 1941-KN 5 Cents, struck by the King's Norton Mint in Birmingham, were never released for circulation due to the takeover of Hong Kong by the Japanese in 1941." The Heaton mint also produced 777,000 five cent coins for Hong Kong in 1941 and actually shipped them but the ship was torpedoed before it could arrive at the colony. The other dates, 1938 and 1939, are common. British coinage for Hong Kong ceased in 1997 when the island was returned to China. The bust of King George VI appears on the obverse.
