Hohnstein in 1789, as part of Hannover and Prussia

This specimen was lot 55687 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hohnstein. Taler, (15)68. Ellrich Mint. Wolfgang Volkmar. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. From the Collection of Richard Evans Norton (1872-1946)." The county of Hohnstein was a minor state, neighbor of Stolberg, Eichsfeld and Schwarzburg. The local dynasty fell extinct in 1593. The state was ruled by Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1613-34 and Sayn-Wittgenstein 1634-1701. It was later partitioned between Hannover and Prussia. This type is noted for 1562-71, all with two digit dates, and is rather scarce.
