Künker sale 264, lot 3732

This specimen was lot 3732 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$4,909 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"STADT 5 Goldgulden o. J. (vermutlich 1622-1630), auf die Vermehrung des Stadtwappens durch Karl V. im Jahre 1528. Münzmeister Matthias Weber. GOLD. R Henkelspur, leichte Bearbeitungsspuren, sehr schön. (Germany, city of Hildesheim. undated five gulden, on receiving the city arms from Charles V in 1528. Scarce, mount mark, lightly tooled, very fine.)"

This type, either a five ducats or a five gold gulden (the low weight suggests the latter), was struck to honor the grant of the city arms to the town by emperor Charles V in 1528. It was struck much later, perhaps on the centennial of the event in 1628.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 17.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 15,17 g.

Catalog reference: Buck/Bahrf. 580; Fr-1310.
