Hesse 1538 thaler Dav-9269
This specimen was lot 32844 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $420. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hesse. Philip Taler 1538 VF Details (Holed and Plugged) PCGS. Variety with arabesques separating the words in the reverse legend. An extremely rare and early taler issue from Hesse which comes fiercely pursued in any grade level. Splendid cabinet tone exists around the outer registers and nicely complements the well-formed lettering. Some scratches are to be noted in the obverse fields for the sake of completeness, but will likely be of little fault for a type which has only appeared in a handful of examples at auction in the past several decades." This rare piece was issued before Hesse was partitioned in 1567, so we have listed it under both Hesse-Cassel and Hesse-Darmstadt. Davenport notes it for 1537-39.
