Sincona sale 33, lot 2228

This specimen was lot 2228 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hessen-Darmstadt, Landgrafschaft, Ludwig VIII. 1739-1768 Konventionstaler 1764. KUPFERABSCHLAG. Vorzüglich-FDC. ANACS AU58 Details. Schrötlingsfehler und Kratzer. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt, Louis VIII, 1739-68, convention thaler of 1764, copper strike. Extremely fine-uncirculated, Planchet faults and scratches.)"

The landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt issued numerous thalers in the eighteenth century (Dav-2313 thru -2339) but most are seldom seen. This off metal strike would not be collectible were the silver issue not so rare. The silver issue is known with mintmaster's initials "R" and "AK".

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen struck in copper.
