Sincona sale 51, lot 2305

This specimen was lot 2305 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$965 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hessen-Darmstadt, Landgrafschaft, Ludwig VIII. 1739-1768. Dukat o. J. (um 1750), Darmstadt. Sogenannter Hirschdukat. Stempel von Conrad Heinrich Küchler. Selten. Fast sehr schön. Fassungsspuren. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt, Louis VIII, 1739-68, undated ducat, Darmstadt mint, the so-called "stag" ducat. Rare, About very fine, Traces of mounting.)"

This type, along with Fr-1226 featuring a boar, is not listed in the SCWC, perhaps excluded on the grounds of being a medal. It is a charming design and one should not be small-minded if one can afford a specimen such as this.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, .109 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3.34 g.

Catalog reference: Schütz 3130, Hoffmeister 3921, Fr-1225, KM unlisted.
