This specimen was lot 40537 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $4,994. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Henneberg. Taler, 1562. NGC XF-40. Georg Ernst (1559-83). RARE type. Dark toned. Demarete Collection." After the local dynasty fell extinct in 1580, this small county in Thuringia was divided among various dukes of Saxony, including that of Saxe-Meiningen, Saxe-Gotha and Saxe-Weimar. Dav-9254A varies from Dav-9254 in the wording of the obverse legend.
