This specimen was lot 72212 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Henneberg. "Mining" Taler, 1697-BA. Ilmenau Mint. NGC AU-58. SCARCE and impressive, this barely handled crown offers a solid strike and elegant gunmetal gray toning, along with its status as the only example of the date seen at NGC." The counts of Henneberg fell extinct in 1580, after which the county was co-ruled by various Saxon dukes. In this period, the rulers were Saxe-Gotha and Saxe-Weimar.
