Helvetian Republic 1803-B batzen
This specimen was lot 5190 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND Helvetische Republik. Batzen 1803, Bern. Fast FDC. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler. (Helvetic Republic, batzen of 1803, Bern mint. About uncirculated, Minor flan flaw)." This type was struck 1799-1803. The Helvetian Republic was a puppet state set up by the French in 1798 on the remnants of the old Swiss Confederation. It collapsed in 1803 under religious and class conflict and Napoleon reorganized it as the Swiss confederation, restoring the liberties of the old cantons. Most of its issues are rare and expensive.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon, this specimen 2.60 g.
