Hatzfeld 1597 thaler Dav-9249
This specimen was lot 2185 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €9,750 (about US$13,806 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · HATZFELD, GRAFSCHAFT Sebastian I. von Hatzfeld-Wildenburg-Krottorf, 1569-1630. Taler 1597 (geprägt 1666 unter Graf Hermann, 1658-1677), Nürnberg, mit Titel Rudolfs II. 28,75 g. Stempelschneider Chr. Moller. Unten: · SEBAST : A HATZFELDT · NO : D : I WILDENB : CROTT :, oben: RVDOLPH : II : D : G : R : I : S : A : Brustbild v. v. in verziertem Mantel//HONOS - ET - VIRTVS Die Personifikationen von Ehre und Tapferkeit stehen sich gegenüber und sind durch eine Kette mit dem gekrönten Hatzfelder Wappenschild verbunden, unten Jahreszahl. RR Herrliche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (Germany, county of Hatzfeld, Sebastian I of Hatzfeld-Wildenburg-Krottorf, 1569-1630, thaler of 1597 (actually struck in 1666 by count Herman, 1658-77), Nuremberg mint, struck in the name of Rudolf II. Obverse: draped bust facing; reverse: the personifications of honor and bravery face each other and are connected by a chain to the crowned Hatzfeld arms, with the date at the bottom. Very rare, superb patina, small planchet defect, extremely fine.)"
This coin seems to be the only silver issue of this prince. The town, now in the state of Hesse, has a population of about 3,000.
