Hanau in 1789, between Isenburg and Frankfurt. Munzenberg is to the north, neighboring Solms

This specimen was lot 2466 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 1,900 CHF (about US$2,864 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Hanau-Münzenberg, Grafschaft, Wilhelm IX. von Hessen-Kassel 1760-1785. Konventionstaler 1784, Hanau. Ausbeute der Bieberer Gruben. Münzmeister Christian Ludwig Röder. Stempelschneider Karl Ludwig Holtzheimer. Mit Laubrand. NGC MS65. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. (Germany, county of Hanau-Münzenberg, William IX of Hesse-Cassel, 1760-1805, convention thaler of 1784, Hanau mint, for the Biberer mine. Mintmaster Christian Ludwig Röder, engraver Karl Ludwig Holtzheimer. Beautiful condition with magnificent patina.)"

The native dynasty fell extinct in 1736 and the state was ruled by the landgraves of Hesse-Cassel until 1803. The other part, Hanau-Lichtenberg, passed to Hesse-Darmstadt. This type was struck 1784 only and is quite scarce.
