Künker sale 400, lot 137
Hanau in 1789, between Isenburg and Frankfurt. Munzenberg is to the north, neighboring Solms

This specimen was lot 137 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$15,568 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HANAU-MÜNZENBERG, GRAFSCHAFT, Friedrich Casimir, 1641-1685. Reichstaler 1664, Buchsweiler. * PAX ET IUSTITIA EXOSCULENTUR SESE : Geharnischtes Brustbid r. mit umgelegtem Mantel//» FRID . CAS . COM . HAN . RH . BIP . DN . M . L . O . MAR . ET ADV . ARG : Vierfach behelmtes Wappen. Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, county of Hanau-Munzenberg, Frederick Casimir, 1641-85, thaler of 1664, Buschsweiler mint. Obverse: armored and mantled bust right; reverse: quadruple helmeted arms. Extremely rare, fine patina, edge defects, about extremely fine.)"

The SCWC does not list any thalers for Hanau-Munzenberg between 1638 (KM 61) and 1764 (KM 93). This is because the line lapsed in 1642 on the death of Johann Ernst, the last count. This coin appears as an issue of Hanau-Lichtenberg, where we have filed it. Friedrich Casimir's quixotic project to found a colony in South America left the county deeply in debt. Hanau-Munzenberg was erected again in 1691 for Friedrich Casimir's nephew, Philipp Reinhard. Hanau-Lichtenberg eventually fell to Hesse-Darmstadt.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.99 g.

Catalog reference: KM 66, Dav-6702; Suchier 477.
