Künker sale 336, lot 6531

This specimen was lot 6531 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,356 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HAMBURG, STADT, 2 Dukaten 1802, mit Titel von Franz II. GOLD. R Nur 1.256 Exemplare geprägt. Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Hamburg, double ducat of 1802, in the name of Francis II. Scarce, only 1,256 struck, minor edge defect, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1793-1806 in small numbers. Hamburg did not give up minting ducats until 1872, amid the coinage reform resulting from unification.
