Haiti An 10 12 centimes
In 1803, native forces made good their rebellion against French rule, marking the first successful slave rebellion in the Western hemisphere. Turmoil did not cease with independence as the United States withheld its recognition and various factions contended for power. This specimen was lot 1523 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $287.88. The catalog description[1] noted, "Haiti, 12 centimes, AN 10 (1813), encapsulated NGC XF 45. Key first date of type in nice grade with rich old toning, bold strike, typically incomplete rims (as made)." This type was struck An 10-12 for the Western Republic of Haiti, which was one of the autonomous fragments of Haiti after securing independence from France in 1804.
