Haiti 1999 50 centimes
This specimen was lot 72287 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "HAITI. 50 Centimes, 1999. PCGS SPECIMEN-64 Gold Shield. No obverse diacritics variety. Commemorating national hero Charlemagne Peralte, this lustrous Near Gem presents tremendous radiance and brilliance." This type was struck in copper-nickel 1986-91 and in nickel-plated steel 1995 and 1999. Peralte (1886-1919) was a Haitian army officer who led guerrilla resistance to the American occupation of Haiti during 1915-19. This portrait also appeared on five and twenty centimes (KM 154 and KM 152).
