Guyana 1989 cent
This specimen was lot 73501 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUYANA. Cent, 1989. Llantrisant Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield. Emanating from the antepenultimate year of issue for the series, this robust Gem radiates with brilliance and stands as one of the finest seen at PCGS, as it has been exceeded by just three specimens. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Guyana began its numismatic life as the Dutch-held colony of Essequibo & Demerary, which later became British Guiana. Independence was obtained in 1966. Guyana gravitates toward relations with English-speaking Caribbean island nations such as Trinidad and Tobago rather than with other South American nations. This type was struck 1967, 1972-92. The Franklin mint struck cents 1976-80 of a different design; these were sold to collectors.
