Guatemala introduced one centavo pieces with the bust of Bartolome de las Casas in 1949. Las Casas was a strident protester against exploitation of the Indians in 16th century Guatemala, which exploitation continues to this day. He even went so far as to advocate the importation of Negro slaves so as to reduce the demand for Indian labor. Many variations of the basic design exist, depending on which contractor actually produced the coin. This subtype was struck 1993-95.
