SB824-41187r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41187 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. 1/4 Real, 1895. Nueva Guatemala Mint. NGC MS-65. A RARE date unlisted in the Standard Catalog of World Coins. This Gem flashes with pastel iridescence on its overall deep gray tone. Handsome and well-preserved, this is a tempting offering for astute collectors of this extensive series. From the EMO Collection." This type with the lion on the reverse is listed in the SCWC for 1892-94. The auctioneers and NGC seems satisfied that this specimen is an 1895 but a possibility remains that it is a garbled 1893/2. The value reverse (KM 162) for 1895 is very common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but doubtless rare.

Specification: 0.77 g, 0.835 fine silver.

Catalog reference: EMO-2878 (Plate coin); cf. KM-159.
