Guatemala 1841-NG MA 8 reales
This specimen was lot 33617 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Central American Republic 8 Reales 1841 NG-MA AU58 NGC. Nueva Guatemala mint, assayer, 'MA'. Light silvery toning with appealing underlying luster and a crisp strike." This type was struck in Guatemala 1824-47 and in Costa Rica in 1831. It is not rare except in the choice condition shown here. Overdate 1841/37 is noted for the year, and this specimen may be an example. The type is listed under the Central American Republic. This federation was an attempt to unite all the former Spanish provinces of Central America into one country but collapsed amid recrimination and civil war.
Recorded mintage: unknown but worth about double the common date.
