Guatemala 1834-NG M 8 reales
This specimen was lot 2165 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. 8 Reales, 1834-NG M. Nueva Guatemala Mint, Assayer "M". NGC AU-58. Five mountains with radiant sun rising, date below; Reverse: Ceiba Tree divides denomination. SCARCE DATE. The sole example at this numeric grade with only one example certified finer by NGC and PCGS. Awe inspiring toning, evocative of a sunrise, with soothing tangerine and muted corals with an abundance of luster. A truly gorgeous example. From the Richard Stuart Collection." This type was struck in Guatemala 1824-47 and in Costa Rica in 1831. It is not rare except in the choice condition shown here. The type is listed under the Central American Republic. This federation was an attempt to unite all the former Spanish provinces of Central America into one country but collapsed amid recrimination and civil war.
