Guatemala 1825-NG M 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 24450 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $38,187.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Extremely Rare 1825 NG-M 8 Escudos - First Offering in Over 30 Years Central American Republic gold 8 Escudos 1825 NG-M, AU Details (Scratches) NGC. Sharp strike, with luster still present in the fields, but with a few hairlines and one scratch across the volcanoes responsible for the assigned AU-Details grade. Only three confirmed specimens by the cataloger, this being either the finest or second finest. To the knowledge of the cataloger, this date has only been publicly offered once since 1980 (Freeman Craig 3/1981, lot 485). That coin was a VF-XF example, and the its description read: At the Miami 1974 ANA, Lloyd Engeran was offering an EF-AU for about US$ 25000... he advertised that coin in World Coin News sometime later that year. In all probability, that mentioned EF-AU coin was the present I. Rudman specimen, with Engeran consigning it to Kagin's for their 1977 ANA auction after failing to sell it ($25,000 was a hefty sum forty years ago). In any case, the present specimen, the Freeman Craig specimen and another housed in a preeminent California collection are the only examples the cataloger has confirmed. A unique opportunity to acquire one of the rarest of all Latin American Republican Onzas, in the same category as the famed Argentina sunface 1829 8 Escudos. From The Isaac Rudman Collection of Guatemala Coins." This specimen was one of a type struck in Guatemala 1824-25 and sporadically in Costa Rica 1828-37. All are rare. The type is listed in the SCWC under the Central American Republic. This federation was an attempt to unite all the former Spanish provinces of Central America into one country but collapsed amid recrimination and civil war.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
