Nomisma Arte auction 67, lot 473

This specimen was lot 473 in Nomisma Arte auction 67 (Verona, Italy, April 2023), where it did not sell. The lot description noted, "GUASTALLA Ferrante III (1632-1678) Scudo 1664, RRR Esemplare di ottimo argento e ben coniato MB+. (duchy of Guastalla, Ferrante Gonzaga III, 1632-78, scudo of 1664, very rare, outstanding quality and well struck, choice Fine.)" The county of Guastalla, raised to a duchy in 1621, was ruled by the Gonzagas 1539-1748 and thereupon merged with the duchy of Parma. Issues for this locality are sparse and rare. This type is really too light for a crown but was struck using the same dies as a double scudo (Dav-3917) so Davenport included it. A tallero of 1673 (Dav-3918) completes the crowns of this ruler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 19,46 g.

Catalog reference: MIR 414; KM 77, Dav-3917A.
