Schulman auction 379, lot 555

This specimen was lot 555 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €380 (about US$488 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GRONINGEN Stad. Vlieger of stuiver. 1474, Silver Dubbele adelaar met dwarsbalkschild schuinstaand tussen de klauwen. Kz. lang gevoet kruis, G in het hart, in omschrift romeins jaartal. Miniem onregelmatige rand. Fraai gepatineerd. Zeer fraai +. (city of Groningen, silver vlieger or stuiver of 1474. Obverse: double headed eagle with the city arms between its claws; reverse: long cross, "G" at the center, Roman numeral date in the legend. Slightly irregular edge, nica toning, choice very fine.)"

The vliegers of Brabant were about 6 g and had a face value of four patards. This coin was well known enough to be imitated in Limburg.
