This specimen was lot 74174 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 2005. Llantrisant Mint. Elizabeth II. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. An attractive, technically flawless Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices." Gold sovereigns have not circulated in commerce since the late 1920's. Those made since were sold to collectors and bullion speculators. This type, with the reverse designed by Timothy Noad, was struck 2005 only.
Recorded mintage: 45,542 plus 17,500 proofs.
Specification: 7.988 g, 0.917 fine gold, 0.2357 troy oz AGW, 22. 05 mm diameter.
