This specimen was lot 34189 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Elizabeth II Mint Error - Wrong Planchet Shilling 1962 MS64 PCGS. Struck on a 3.33 g copper nickel planchet." In 1902, the shilling was redesigned to use the English royal crest on the reverse (KM 800). Complaints from Scottish nationalists led to the introduction of the Scottish crest reverse in 1937 (KM 854) and the two were minted simultaneously until 1970. Proofs are rare.
Recorded mintage: 36,704,000 (English crest) + 17,475,000 (Scottish crest, shown here) plus proofs.
Specification: 5.65 g, copper-nickel, 23.5 mm diameter.
