Great Britain 1894 crown
This specimen was lot 31761 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Victoria Crown 1894 MS64 NGC. LVII edge. One of the scarcest dates for Victoria's Crown and in gorgeous near-gem grade. Unusually for the type, it has been met with practically no toning and thus appears as white and lustrous as when first struck! The highest surfaces have encountered some light contact, but nothing severe. A truly premium quality specimen of arguably the most popular British silver denomination." This bust of the queen was used from 1893 until her death in 1901. The type is fairly available but 1893 is the only date for which proofs are listed. A crown was five shillings or one-fourth of a pound.
Recorded mintage: 145,000.
Specification: 28.275 g, 0.925 fine silver, .840 troy oz ASW, lettered edge.
