Great Britain 1800 1/3 guinea
This specimen was lot 1085 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/3 Guinea, 1800. George III (1760-1820). NGC MS-64. Tied for finest graded. Sharply struck. Sparkling luster." This type was struck 1797-1800, presumably to pay soldiers and sailors during the Napoleonic Wars; it is the first of its denomination. The last type of this denomination was issued 1804-1813. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. At that time the guinea, which heretofore had varied in value, was fixed at 21 shillings.
