Great Britain 1793 1/2 guinea
This specimen was lot 71327 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Guinea, 1793. London Mint. George III. PCGS AU-58. The degree of handling on this near-Mint specimen is barely perceivable, all while the coin itself radiates with original luster and remains entirely wholesome and problem-free." This type, struck 1787-1800, is the commonest English gold coin of the eighteenth century. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. As the guinea was 21 shillings, this coin was ten shillings, six pence.
