Great Britain 1735 shilling
This specimen was lot 71139 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1735. London Mint. George II. PCGS EF-45. This well struck and lightly circulated Shilling offers charming and softly worn details along with an attractive touch of mint glossiness." This type was struck with numerous variants 1727-41 and is fairly common in worn condition. This bust was used 1734-37. The mint did not produce near enough small change for the industrial boom of the eighteenth century, leading to a proliferation of private tokens. The situation would not be rectified until the reform of 1817.
