This specimen was lot 31181 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $66,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. William III gold 5 Guineas 1699 AU58 NGC, UN DECIMO edge. An impactful example of this turn-of-the-century emission revealing only light signs of circulation to place it at the finest tier of AU condition. Every detail remains preserved to near-completion, with only faint friction visible across the surfaces, though exceedingly little wear is actually present to the devices. William's portrait is sharply contoured and reveals fine details throughout his hair and laureate wreath, a bright copper-red patina enriching the lustrous surfaces of the planchet and furthering the example's strong eye appeal. Only a single selection seen across both major grading services currently certifies finer - a single "MS62" graded by NGC - a fact that clearly attests to the difficulty of locating this issue in finer states of preservation. Accordingly, we do not doubt that this near-Mint State 5 Guineas will see fervent bidding action as it crosses the auction block." This date comes with (Fr-311) and without an elephant below the bust.
