Sincona sale 33, lot 2743

This specimen was lot 2743 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,612 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GOLDKÜSTE | British Outpost 1750-1874. Georg III. 1760-1820 1/2 Ackey 1818. Sehr selten. Polierte Platte. FDC. Hübsche Patina. (Gold Coast station, British colony, 1750-1874, George III, 1760-1820, half ackey of 1818. Very rare, proof, Attractive patina.)"

The trading company that ran the station on the African outpost of the Gold Coast had this half ackey and accompanying one ackey struck in 1818. We don't know if any made it to Africa to circulate there. The Gold Coast was a major center of the slave trade in the eighteenth century but Britain had abolished the slave trade by 1818. Ivory, gold and palm oil were probably the main trade items.

Recorded mintage: 2,170 plus proofs and restrikes.

Specification: 7.09 g, 0.925 fine silver, .210 troy oz ASW, this specimen 7.00 g.

Catalog reference: KM 8.
