This specimen was lot 43300 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Rupia, 1818. NGC EF-45. SCARCE one year "Barbarous Bust" portrait type. Crudely manufactured as is typical with bold centers and olive brown toned surfaces. Presently the only example of this variety certified by NGC." This type (KM 239) is listed for 1818-26 but there is considerable year-to-year variation. In 1871, the Goa mint was closed and milled coinage from the British mints was introduced.
