This specimen was lot 56433 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Tanga, 1744. Goa Mint. Joao V. PCGS EF-40." By 1744, Portuguese holdings in India were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. One tanga was sixty réis or one tenth of a rupia. This type was struck 1740-51 but is expensive. The coins are so crude that collectible specimens are few.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.2 g, silver.
Catalog reference: KM-119.
