This specimen was lot 46594 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. 5 Reis, 1711. Goa Mint. Joao V. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details." This type is known dated 1711-12 and 1715. Like most issues from Portuguese India before the British took over minting their coins, it is very crude. This example appears to be struck over an older coin. The obverse shows "IV", short for "João V", with the value on the reverse. Five réis was one twelfth of a tanga.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 4.5 g, copper.
Catalog reference: KM-95; Gomes-45.01.
