Steve Album sale 51, lot 2816

This specimen was lot 2816 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $96. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGUESE INDIA: GOA: José I, 1750-1777, AE 1/2 tanga, ND, inscribed meia tanga for half tanga, decent strike, F-VF, R, ex SARC Auction 12, Lot 1287." By 1751, Portuguese holdings in India were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. The half tanga was thirty réis or 1/20 rupia and was often struck in silver.
