This ten cedis was struck at the Royal Mint for Ghana in 1991. The word cedi is the Akan word for cowry shell. Cowries (plural of cowry) were formerly used as currency in what is now Ghana. The cedi was introduced in 1965, reformed in 1967 (1 new cedi = 1.2 old cedis) and again in 2007 (1 new cedi = 10,000 old cedis). In 1991, US$1 = 345-390 cedis.
