Ghana 1983 500 cedis
This specimen was lot 542 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,858 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"GHANA, Republik, seit 1960. 500 Cedis 1983. Year of the Scout. Nur 2'000 Exemplare geprägt. (republic of Ghana, since 1960, five hundred cedis of 1983, year of the Scout. Only 2'000 pieces struck. NGC PF69 ULTRA CAMEO.)"
Ghana was a former British colony and was the first sub-Saharan nation (after Ethiopia) to achieve independence, which occurred in 1957. Coinage 1966 and later is in pesawas and cedis (100 pesawas = 1 cedi). Cedi means 'cowrie shell', as those shells functioned as money in olden days. Cowrie shells, cacao pods (a main export of Ghana), and talking drums adorn many of the coins post-1958. This NCLT is listed in KM as dated 1984.
